What to put on a returning to work resume

  • Explain the gap in one line. Put it in your summary or cover letter and move on: "Returning to work after five years as a full-time parent." Short and direct reads as confident.

  • Count what you did while away. Volunteer roles, a PTA position, caring for a family member, freelance work, and courses are all real activity. List them like jobs, with dates and results.

  • Put your strongest experience first. If your best work was before the gap, use a summary and skills section at the top so a reader sees your value before they see the dates.

  • Show your skills are current. Name the tools in use today. A recent certificate, a short online course, or a software you practiced shows you kept learning.

  • Use years instead of months for older jobs. Listing 2014 to 2020 instead of exact months makes small gaps less visible without hiding anything.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing a long explanation of the gap on the resume itself
  • Leaving out volunteer work because it was unpaid
  • Listing old software or skills that no longer match what employers use

Words employers look for

returning professional, recent certificate, volunteer leadership, transferable skills, budgeting, scheduling, customer service, organized, current software, reliable. Use the ones that are true for you, in the same words the job posting uses.

Read the sample letter for Medical Billing Coordinator

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am applying for the Medical Billing Coordinator position at Hudson Valley Pediatrics. After five years at home raising my children, I am ready to return to full-time work, and I recently completed a medical billing and coding certificate to bring my skills up to date.

Before taking time away, I spent six years as a patient scheduling coordinator at a six-provider practice, where I verified insurance and entered charges daily. Most recently, as PTA treasurer, I managed a $14,000 budget and reconciled every deposit without a discrepancy.

I am accurate, I stay calm under pressure, and I am excited to give a busy practice my full attention. Thank you for considering my application.

Sincerely,
Priya Nair

Questions

How do I explain a gap on my resume?

Give it a single honest line, like "Full-time parent, 2020 to 2025," or mention it in your summary. Then show what you did during that time and any recent training.

Should I list "stay-at-home parent" as a job?

You can, with dates, as long as the bullets focus on real skills like budgeting, scheduling, or coordinating care. You can also leave it off and let your volunteer work and certificate fill the space.

How big does a gap have to be before I mention it?

A gap of a year or more is usually worth a line. Shorter gaps can often be handled by listing years instead of months.

Should I use a functional resume that hides dates?

A mix is better. Lead with a summary and skills, then list your jobs with dates. Resumes with no dates at all tend to make employers more suspicious, not less.
