What to put on a teacher resume

  • Put your certification near the top. Principals check certification first. Name the certificate, the grades it covers, and any additional areas, like special education or a language.

  • Replace duties with data. "Taught reading" tells a principal nothing. "Raised reading on grade level from 52% to 71%" tells them what happens when you teach. Use test scores, growth, or attendance.

  • Name the grade, class size, and subjects. These are the facts a hiring team uses to picture you in their building. List them in each job entry.

  • Show how you work with families and colleagues. Teaching is team work. A line about family updates, co-teaching, or leading a grade-level team shows you fit in a school, not just a classroom.

  • If you are new, use student teaching. List your placement with school, grade, dates, and what you taught. Add lesson units you built and any results you measured.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Opening with a long statement about teaching philosophy instead of facts
  • Listing every professional development workshop instead of the few that matter
  • Leaving out grade levels and class size so the reader has to guess

Dear Principal Reyes,

I am writing to apply for the 5th grade teaching position at Lakeside Elementary School. I am a certified elementary teacher with six years of experience in grades four and five, and I am excited about the chance to join a school that values strong family partnerships.

Last year, I raised the share of students reading at grade level in my class from 52% to 71% through small-group instruction and weekly progress checks. I also teach a class that includes students with learning support plans, and I work closely with our special education team to keep every student included.

I would welcome the chance to visit your classrooms and talk about how I can support your students. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Elena Kowalski

Questions

How long should a teacher resume be?

One page for most teachers with under 10 years of experience. Two pages is fine with a long record of leadership, coaching, or grants, as long as page two is just as strong.

Should I include student teaching?

Yes, if you are a new teacher or have fewer than 2 years in the classroom. List it like a job, with the school, grade, and results.

Do school districts use online application systems?

Many do, so keep your resume simple and clean so it copies into text boxes without breaking. Avoid tables and text boxes inside the document.

What should I do about references?

Have a principal, mentor teacher, or colleague ready, and ask each person before you list them. Most applications ask for references later, so you do not have to put them on the resume.
