What to put on a custodian resume

  • State the size of the space you've maintained. Square footage, number of floors, or number of building occupants gives a facilities manager a real sense of scale.

  • List specific equipment. Floor buffers, carpet extractors, pressure washers - naming your equipment experience shows you need less training.

  • Mention any minor repair skills. Changing light fixtures, fixing door hardware, or basic plumbing is valuable and worth its own line.

  • Highlight your attendance and reliability. A clean, dependable attendance record is one of the most valued traits in this field - say so directly.

  • Mention chemical or safety training. Experience following chemical safety procedures (often called SDS or OSHA training) reassures an employer you work safely.

Bullet examples you can adapt

These are examples only - replace every number and detail with your own true experience before you use them.

  • Maintained a 45,000 sq ft facility serving 500 occupants
  • Operated floor buffers and carpet extractors on a weekly schedule
  • Performed minor repairs, reducing outside service calls
  • Managed cleaning supply inventory within a monthly budget
  • Maintained a perfect attendance record over 3 years
  • Followed chemical safety (SDS) procedures with zero incidents
  • Trained a new custodial staff member on equipment and procedures
  • Completed nightly cleaning for multiple floors with consistent inspection scores

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing only "cleaned building" with no detail on size, equipment, or schedule
  • Leaving out any repair or maintenance skills you have
  • Not mentioning your attendance record, which matters a lot in this field

Dear Facilities Manager,

I am writing to apply for the custodian position with Westview School District. I have six years of experience maintaining school and office facilities, most recently as head custodian at Brookline Elementary School, where I care for a 45,000 square foot building.

I am comfortable with floor care equipment, basic repairs, and chemical safety procedures, and I take pride in keeping a space running smoothly without needing to be asked twice. I have a perfect attendance record and am used to working independently.

I am available to start right away and would welcome the chance to bring that same reliability to your facility. Thank you for considering my application.

Sincerely,
Harold Jennings

Questions interviewers may ask about your resume

  • How do you prioritize tasks when working a shift alone?

  • Tell me about your experience with floor care equipment.

  • What would you do if you noticed a safety hazard, like a spill or broken fixture?

  • How do you handle a tight schedule when something unexpected comes up?

Questions

Do I need certifications to be a custodian?

Not usually required, but safety training (chemical handling, equipment operation) is a plus. List any training you've completed.

How do I describe night-shift or solo work?

Mention it directly - it shows you can work independently and manage your own schedule, which many employers value.

Should I include minor repair experience?

Yes, even basic skills like changing a light fixture or fixing a door hinge are useful to mention - they can set you apart.

What if I've only cleaned residential spaces, not commercial ones?

List it anyway - the core skills transfer. Just be clear about the scale so an employer knows what to expect.

Will the AI make things up on my resume?

The tools only use what you give them - your own jobs, dates, schools, skills, and numbers for this custodian resume - and a suggestion that adds one you didn't provide is automatically dropped, not just discouraged. They aren't perfect at wording, though, so read every suggestion before you apply it.
